We, the undersigned, firmly believe

/ and that there can be no impunity for crimes committed by the deposed Iraqi regime and that the crimes of which he is accused along with other former President Saddam Hussein represent serious violations of human rights for which there can be no immunity;

Firmly convinced / and that the trial of Saddam Hussein, because it is a critical time to establish the crimes committed by the former regime in Iraq but also to commit to the principles of accountability and rule of law, must be conducted in full compliance with all internationally recognized safeguards because the process is fair and impartial manner, thereby avoiding to provide pretexts for those who want to discredit the prosecution by presenting it as victor's justice or revenge on the losers of the victims against their tormentor;

firmly believe s that the Iraqi criminal justice system as a whole is to apply international rules and, in particular, the trial of Saddam Hussein should reflect the principles established for the international criminal tribunals, which exclude the use of the death penalty;

firmly believe s that the decision to suspend the application of the death penalty by the Iraqi parliament and government would be the most obvious example of a change as compared to the methods of the old regime and a strong signal of its commitment to respect human dignity in the entire region

We call on the Iraqi government and parliament will be prevented because the use of the death penalty against Saddam Hussein and of his co-defendants if they are convicted of serious crimes for which they are accused, in line with the new commitment to respect the basic dignity that Iraq recognizes the right of every human being.

We call on Iraqi authorities to reinstate the moratorium on the death penalty established in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein in order to strengthen the completion of the democratic transition of Iraq to the principles of a rule of law.

We ask the Iraqi Government and Parliament to consider the establishment of a Truth Commission or other appropriate tool as a way to ensure respect for international law, the assessment as possible of responsibility for serious crimes and At the same time, provide the best opportunities for the establishment of a state of law in Iraq.

ask the Italian government and the European Commission to support the new Iraqi government against the Italian and European opposition to the use of the death penalty, even against Saddam Hussein, and Iraq in favor of maintaining a moratorium on executions with a view to the abolition of the death penalty.
